Also to add to this. Sokka wasn’t just the funny, popular guy. He was also the strategist among the group, perhaps the wisest in terms of utilising all the groups strengths. 

I disagree with this for one overarching reason: THERE HAS ONLY BEEN ONE SEASON OF LOK AND THREE OF A:TLA.

Remember, the characters from A:TLA had three seasons (all of which were 20-21 episodes long) of character development, including filler episodes whose sole purpose was character development. On the other hand, LOK has only had one season—only twelve episodes long, mind you—with absolutely no filler episodes. Also note that there, of course was always the intention of adding more seasons (at least one, if not two). So expecting the same amount of character development over 61 episodes to occur over just twelve? That’s illogical.

Plus, I disagree with the direct comparison of the characters as such. Zuko and Mako? Not the same character type. Bolin and Sokka? Sure they’d be bro’s, but again, not the same character type. Korra and Aang are complete opposite ends of the spectrum (Tenzin even notes as much); Aang was a meek, hippie-esque thirteen-year-old boy, while Korra is a brusque, loud, fierce adolescent girl. The only semi-logical comparison would, in point of fact, be Suki and Asami, but I would hardly describe Asami as off to the side, considering she is still part of Team Avatar. A spare wheel? Yes. Abandoned by the team? No.
